Shipshaw river trail

Share article

Time: 2h30 | Difficulty: easy | Length: 5.5km | Pet friendly | Family friendly

The Shipshaw river trail is a lovely hidden gem just 10 minutes from St-Honoré. It is a “secret” trail know mostly by locals that is definitely worth trying out. The family friendly trail is only 5.5km long, so it’s perfect for an afternoon outing. The trail is not a loop, when you get to the end there is a picnic table where you can rest and admire the view of the river before heading back.

**This trail is not to be confused with the Chute-aux-Galets trail in St-David-de-Falardeau which also follows the Shipshaw river.**

The trail

The trail is well laid out, with newly constructed stairs, ramps and bridges. The first half of the trail takes you down towards the river while the second continues along its banks. If it has been raining a lot during the days before your hike there are sections on the second half that can be quite muddy. It would therefore be important to have good hiking shoes.

Pet friendly

This trail is perfect for spending time with your canine companions. Just be careful at the end of the trail that they don’t jump into the river because the current is quite strong.

How to get there

To access the trail, if you’re coming from Saguenay, take rue de l’Hôtel-de-ville (left at the lights in front of the church). Continue for 12km and right before going down the hill towards the bridge you’ll see the sign indicating the trail head. Parking is down the right side junction (the one on the left is an ATV trail). It is also possible to arrive from Saint-Ambroise via route Portage Lapointe. The parking lot can hold approximately 10 cars.
